Youth Government Day & Youth Council Meeting
Youth Government Day
April 21, 2014
PELHAM – Monday, April 21, 2014, approximately 275 fifth grade students and their teachers from Valley Intermediate School will visit Pelham City Hall to gain first hand knowledge about municipal government and services. Students tour the administration offices, library, and the revenue, court, police, fire, water and public works departments to learn how each one provides services to the city. A part of the fifth grade school curriculum, Youth Government Day (YGD) has become an exciting learning experience for the students.
Each spring the Valley Intermediate fifth grade students hold a mock election and elect a mayor, five city council members, a chamber of commerce president and a student for each city department head position. On YGD each elected student is paired with the city official they represent and spend a half day observing how city duties are conducted.
Monday night immediately following our city council meeting, student officials conduct their own YGD council meeting. Each student department head gives a report of what they learned and offers suggestions on how they would improve the city.
The Pelham City Council meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. at Pelham City Hall.
